Opies BBQ and Spicewood Winery

Saturday turned out to be a great day for a drive through the Texas hill country!  The group met at Cavender’s at around 9:00 am for the driver’s briefing and to line up ready for our  1.5 hour drive to Opie’s Barbecue in Spicewood, Texas.  The first part of the trip was led by Bob Butler and we left Cavender’s with 28 cars.

Ever wonder what it looks like to see 27 Corvettes in a row behind you on the highway!!

We had a quick stop along 290 at a rest stop.  I’m sure the other visitors enjoyed the sight of 28 Corvettes all in a row around the parking lot.

We arrived at Opie’s just as they opened at 11:00.  As you enter the restaurant,  all the meats they serve are in a large warming bin on your right.  The pit master asked you what type of meat and how much. (it’s sold by the pound).  A staff member get your meat and cuts it for you on the tray while you go through the line and pick your sides, get your drink and desert.  Your meat order joins you at the register.  Yummy!  Everything was delicious, including all the butterbeans you can eat!

After everyone was filled to the gills, many of the group continued our adventure to the Spicewood Vineyard just a mile or so away.  Lou Pisano led this leg of the trip.  There was a wine tasting that several participated in, while others just enjoyed the rocking chairs in the lounge area or walked around the grounds.

Overall another successful DRIVE AND DINE for the TCA!!

Republican Party of Bexar County Car Show

Several members from TCA attended the Republican Party of Bexar County Car Show on Sunday at Alzafar Shrine.  This was an Open Car show, so lots of specialty cars as well as our few Corvettes.   We did have a few winners.  Bob Butler took “Best in Class” for his 1967 Coupe and Gary Blum and Andrew Golden both took class awards in their category.

28th Annual Lone Star Corvette Classic

The TCA had several members participate in the Lone Star Classic this past weekend.  Our trip was coordinated by Andrew and Kathleen Golden with 25 cars signed up to travel to Ft. Worth.  Due to weather and other circumstances we had a couple of cancellations, but overall, we still had 22 cars make the journey.

Our club took FIRST PLACE in the participation trophy

The following members actually entered cars into the car show.  In the judged category was Butler, Murphy, Reinert, Savage and Specht.  For the “show and shine” category the cars entered were Blum, Golden, Marazzi, Read, and Sauder.

Of course some members also got awards.  Rosa Reinert was the big winner with two awards.  She received the “President’s Award” and also a Class Award.   Blum, Golden, Marazzi, Read, Savage and Linda Specht also came home with an award.

Other images of the TCA member’s participation this weekend including the Friday Night BBQ at the Circle R Dude Ranch and Sunday at the Texas Motor Speedway can be viewed on our Flicker Site.

2017 Hill Country Run

Our current tradition is to hold a hill country run on the Sunday morning following our car show.  This year our drive took us from Boerne to San Marcos through the hill country with a comfort stop in Blanco Texas.   Images of our start, stop and luncheon can be viewed on our Flickr site here.

2017 Car Show Awards

The Texas Corvette Association held their car show on April 22, 2017 in Boerne, Texas.  In addition to several car class awards, the club also had the Mayor of Boerne select his favorite and present the “Mayor’s Award” to Gary and Rita Nyland for their 1955 Chevrolet Nomad Station.

At the end of the regular awards, Covenant, our Best in Show trophy sponsor, selected James William’s car to receive the “Best in Show” trophy.

And before the awards were presented we had a special visit from our own Vanessa Serna , this year’s Fiesta Especial Queen!

Friday Evening Meet and Greet

Over the 25 years that TCA has held a car show, the Friday evening event has changed many times.  In the early days we held a dance but today we hold a “Meet and Greet” to welcome our guest from out-of-town and other non-TCA members to join us for hors d’oeuvres and drinks and an evening of camaraderie.

This year we had a new venue.  We hosted our Meet and Greet at the Cibolo Nature Center on City Park Rd in Boerne.  It was a wonderful environment for an evening get together and the food was fantastic!  The food was provided by the Hungry Horse Restaurant and Catering in Boerne and the selection was outstanding!   I believe everyone had plenty to eat  (even though we ran out of the delicious shrimp!).  We had so much positive feedback on this location that we have already reserved it for our Friday night event next year!  Don’t miss it!

Car show participants that pre-registered were able to pick up their packets and T-shirts at the event so they were ready for the show on Saturday morning.

Here are a couple of images, but a complete gallery is available on our Flickr site.

The Parking Crews

The Annual Car Show might be behind us, but the work and preparation that goes into making this event a success is never-ending.  Too many of our TCA members never see the level of effort it takes, because they are not among the army of dedicated member’s that work tirelessly to pull off these annual events.  The images below are from Friday, the day before the show, when a couple dozen or more of our members came to Boerne with tape measures, chalk and paint cans in hand and marked the parking places on the central plaza and the city streets in preparation for the Saturday morning show.   After the work was finished, we all gathered at Soda Pops for burgers and drinks and a chance to tell a few stories before heading home to prepare for the evening Meet and Greet.

If you have never volunteered to help with our Annual Car Show, then maybe this is a great place for you to begin next year.  We need loads of folks to help with parking, both in preparation of the grounds and the morning of the show to direct traffic and park cars.  It’s a great opportunity to get to know members of the club and join in some fun!  Next year when the call goes out for parking teams… SIGN UP!!  Come and join us and get to know your fellow members.  It’s an easy way to support your club!

Lester’s Car Show

Lester’s Car Show was held on Saturday, May 13th.  We had 18 TCA cars join the event CEO for arrival at Lesters, but other TCA members had non-Corvettes entered as well….a great turn out for the club!

The following members took awards in their various classes:

  • Tom Marazzi
  • Ron Fairman
  • Tim Meza
  • Charles Broadrick
  • Bernie Jensen
  • Bob Butler

  • Renee Read
  • Mike Sugioka
  • Rosa Reinert
  • Steve Siorleja

Hangar Hotel – Fredericksburg

Rick and Cheri Creekmore hosted a group in an overnight event to the Hangar Hotel in Fredericksburg on May 11/12.  They visited the George H W Bush WWII and Admiral Nimitz museum and enjoyed dinner at the Cabernet Grill.  Next morning following breakfast at the Hangar Inn Diner they did a little shopping in Fredericksburg and headed back to San Antonio.  A nice two day get away in the hill country!

Several of our members attended the COTA event this year and TCA won the Club Participant Award.    Linda Specht will bring the plaque to our next meeting.

A few highlights from the two day event:

Corvette #3 won GTLM.   Joe Murphy had the winning bid for a painting at the charity auction (see image below), Linda Specht got to climb into the #3 car, Lake and Kathi  Ellis won a hot pit pass, James Jorgensens won an autographed C7R flag, and the Spechts won Corvette Racing water bottles.   Don Specht’s car was chosen by Jan Magnussen at the car show.
